W.I.T.C.H. is an Italian Disney comic series about five teenage girls who become elemental guardians of a mystical universe center.

W.I.T.C.H. is an Italian fantasy comic series created by Elisabetta Gnone, Alessandro Barbucci, and Barbara Canepa, first published by Disney Italy in April 2001. The story centers on five teenage girls who are chosen as guardians of the classical elements—energy, water, fire, earth, and air—and protectors of Kandrakar, a mythical nexus of the universe. The narrative follows their struggles to manage their newfound magical abilities and cosmic responsibilities alongside their everyday adolescent lives. The comic's artistic style drew significant inspiration from manga conventions. The series concluded its 139-issue run in October 2012 and spawned a franchise that included adaptations into an animated series, a video game, and music albums. Creators Barbucci and Canepa later unsuccessfully sued Disney for the rights to W.I.T.C.H. following disagreements, leading Canepa to establish her own comics company. A reboot graphic novel was published in Italy in 2023.

Originally conceived to appeal to a young female audience, the concept evolved from an initial plan for nine issues to a much longer saga due to strong sales. Tensions between the creators and Disney's publishing arm, Buena Vista, led to legal disputes and a departure of some artists from the company. Barbara Canepa founded her own company, Soleil, to pursue more independent and uncensored work, though she could not secure the W.I.T.C.H. rights. Around the same period, Disney's copyright infringement lawsuit against Rainbow SpA, the creators of a competing series, was dismissed, with Rainbow proving their project predated W.I.T.C.H.'s public availability.

Cosmic Guardianship and Elemental Powers

The core narrative of W.I.T.C.H. revolves around five young women who are designated as the Guardians of the Veil, tasked with protecting the mythical realm of Kandrakar, the universe's central point. Each guardian embodies and commands one of the classical elements: Will Vandom (energy), Irma Lair (water), Taranee Cook (fire), Cornelia Hale (earth), and Hay Lin (air). Their powers are intrinsically linked to Kandrakar itself, channeled through objects known as Aurameres, which represent the elemental forces. Upon transformation into their guardian forms, they manifest wings, though initial flight capabilities are limited, with full aerial freedom gained later in the series. The Heart of Kandrakar, a powerful mystical artifact, is central to their ability to assume their enhanced guardian personas.

Interdimensional Conflict and World Settings

The W.I.T.C.H. saga unfolds across various interconnected worlds, with Earth, specifically the city of Heatherfield, serving as the home base for the guardians. Kandrakar is depicted as a sacred, ethereal dimension where beings from countless planets convene to observe universal affairs. A significant conflict arises from Metamoor, a world previously isolated and ruled by the tyrannical Prince Phobos. The Oracle of Kandrakar established a protective veil over Metamoor, but twelve portals opened to Earth, allowing refugees and monsters to cross over and weakening the barrier. The guardians' initial mission involved closing these portals and confronting Phobos, who sought to usurp his sister Elyon's rightful claim to the throne. Other worlds like Arkhanta and Basiliade are also part of the broader cosmic landscape, contributing to the series' complex interdimensional mythology.

Narrative Arcs and Thematic Elements

The comic's first major arc, "The Twelve Portals," introduced the conflict on Metamoor and the guardians' struggle against Prince Phobos and his manipulative right-hand man, Lord Cedric. This saga explored themes of betrayal, destiny, and the fight for liberation, culminating in Elyon's coronation and the restoration of peace to Metamoor. The subsequent arc, "Nerissa's Revenge," presented a new threat in the form of Nerissa, a former Keeper of the Heart of Kandrakar who sought to reclaim her lost power. This storyline delved into themes of jealousy, corrupted power, and sacrifice, with Nerissa's actions leading to the death of a former guardian and her subsequent quest for vengeance. The series also touched upon the complexities of artistic creation and intellectual property rights through the creators' legal disputes with Disney.
