Alexander Macdonald, 1st Baron Macdonald, was a Scottish nobleman, Chief of Clan MacDonald of Sleat, and military officer.

Alexander Macdonald, 1st Baron Macdonald, born around 1745, was a Scottish nobleman and the Chief of Clan MacDonald of Sleat. He was the younger son of Sir Alexander Macdonald, 7th Baronet, and Lady Margaret Montgomerie. His education included Eton, and he served in the Grenadier Guards. Macdonald also held positions as a Deputy Lieutenant of Inverness-shire and a brigadier-general in the Royal Company of Archers. He inherited the baronetcy in 1766 and was elevated to the Irish Peerage as Baron Macdonald in 1776. During his military career, he raised the MacDonald's Highlanders in 1778 and another regiment from the Highlands and Islands between 1794 and 1795.

In 1768, Macdonald married Elizabeth Diana Bosville, with whom he had ten children. His wife passed away in 1789, and Lord Macdonald died six years later in September 1795. He was succeeded by his son Alexander. His descendants included notable figures such as Sir George Sinclair, 2nd Baronet, a writer and MP, and author Catherine Sinclair.

Early Life and Education

Alexander Macdonald, born approximately in 1745, was the second son of Sir Alexander Macdonald, 7th Baronet, and Lady Margaret Montgomerie. His early education took place at Eton College. He later entered military service, joining the Grenadier Guards.

Military and Peerage

Macdonald's career included service as a Deputy Lieutenant of Inverness-shire and as a brigadier-general within the Royal Company of Archers. He assumed the baronetcy upon the death of his older brother in 1766. His significant elevation came in 1776 when he was created Baron Macdonald in the Peerage of Ireland. In 1778, he was instrumental in raising the MacDonald's Highlanders. Later, between 1794 and 1795, he organized another military unit drawn from the Highland and Island regions.

Personal Life and Descendants

Lord Macdonald married Elizabeth Diana Bosville on May 3, 1768. They had a large family, consisting of seven sons and three daughters. Elizabeth Diana Macdonald died in 1789. Alexander Macdonald, 1st Baron Macdonald, passed away in September 1795, six years after his wife. His titles were inherited by his son Alexander. Among their descendants was Catherine Sinclair, an author, and Sir George Sinclair, a Member of Parliament and writer.
