Albert E. Cowdrey

Albert E. Cowdrey (1933-2022) was an American author with a background in historical research and a prolific career in speculative fiction. He earned degrees from Tulane University and Johns Hopkins University. For twenty-five years, he worked as a military historian, primarily in the Washington, D.C. area, eventually serving as Chief of the Special History Branch for the U.S. Army. In this role, he authored historical accounts focusing on the medical aspects of the military.

Beyond his historical work, Cowdrey was a recognized figure in science fiction and fantasy literature. He published a novel, *Crux*, and over fifty short stories. Many of his short works, frequently appearing in *Fantasy and Science Fiction* magazine, drew inspiration from his birthplace and upbringing in New Orleans. His writing achieved significant recognition, making him the sole author to have received accolades from both the American Historical Association and the World Fantasy Convention.
