Al-Ghazali was a highly influential Persian scholar, theologian, and mystic known for his critique of philosophy and his spiritual writings.

Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, a Persian scholar born around 1058, was a towering figure in Islamic intellectual history. He excelled as a jurist, theologian, logician, and mystic, earning the esteemed title "Proof of Islam." His career took a profound turn following a spiritual crisis around 1095, which led him to abandon his prestigious academic post at the Nizamiyya of Baghdad. This period of introspection and seclusion, lasting over a decade, was marked by a deep conviction that Islamic spiritual traditions had become neglected. During this time, he produced many of his most significant works, including his magnum opus, "The Revival of the Religious Sciences," aiming to reawaken the forgotten spiritual knowledge of early Muslims. He died in 1111, leaving a legacy that significantly shaped Islamic thought and spirituality.

Spiritual Crisis and Seclusion

Al-Ghazali's life took a pivotal turn around 1095 when, at the height of his academic career as head of the Nizamiyya of Baghdad, he experienced a profound spiritual crisis. This led him to relinquish his position and adopt an ascetic lifestyle, embarking on a decade of seclusion. He believed he had prioritized worldly status over divine connection. During this period, he withdrew from public teaching at state institutions, though he continued to write and teach privately in Sufi lodges. This time of introspection was crucial for his intellectual and spiritual development, allowing him to focus on what he perceived as the forgotten spiritual sciences within Islam.

Critique of Philosophy and "Incoherence of the Philosophers"

A significant contribution of Al-Ghazali to intellectual history is his critique of philosophy, particularly evident in his work "The Incoherence of the Philosophers." In this book, he challenged the prevailing philosophical traditions, which were heavily influenced by Greek thought, and questioned the concept of natural causality. Al-Ghazali argued that events occur not due to inherent natural laws but through the direct will of God. This perspective, known as theological occasionalism, posited that God's continuous intervention is the true cause of all phenomena, a view that deeply influenced subsequent Islamic philosophical discourse and was later debated by thinkers like Averroes.

Integration of Sufism and Mainstream Islam

Al-Ghazali played a crucial role in bridging the gap between mystical Sufism and orthodox Islamic practice. Belonging to the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence and the Asharite school of theology, he sought to systematize Sufi thought and make it more accessible and acceptable within the broader Islamic community. His writings often aimed to reconcile the esoteric dimensions of Sufism with the exoteric teachings of Islam, emphasizing the importance of inner spiritual purification alongside adherence to religious law and theology. This integration helped solidify Sufism's place within mainstream Islamic tradition.
