The Mahatma Letters, published in 1923, contain correspondence from spiritual entities to A. P. Sinnett, sparking debate within Theosophy.

Published in 1923 by A. Trevor Barker, *The Mahatma Letters to A.P. Sinnett* comprises correspondence purportedly exchanged between 1880 and 1884. According to Theosophical tradition, these letters were penned by spiritual beings known as Koot Hoomi and Morya and sent to A. P. Sinnett. While portions of the letters had appeared in earlier Theosophical publications, such as Sinnett's *The Occult World*, this volume marked their first full release. The collection is considered significant within the Theosophical movement for its detailed exploration of the Theosophical cosmology and spiritual hierarchy. The original letters, initially held by the British Museum, later became part of the British Library's collection starting in 1939.

The book received a range of reactions from Theosophists. Some, like Dr. H. N. Stokes, lauded it as "the most authoritative work of a theosophical nature ever made accessible to the public," deeming it "transcendent in its importance." However, the authenticity and origin of the letters have also been subjects of considerable scrutiny and criticism.

Authenticity and Criticism

The authenticity of the Mahatma Letters has been a focal point of criticism. George Patterson questioned whether the phenomena described were truly from "beings of supernal wisdom and power" or merely "the private thoughts of a clever but not over scrupulous woman." Richard Hodgson of the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) conducted an examination of various "Mahatma documents." Based on comparisons with Madame Blavatsky's handwriting, Hodgson concluded that most of the examined documents, with one exception, were written by her. The exception, he suggested, was written by Mr. Damodar, a known associate. Hodgson also noted that calligraphic experts, including Mr. Netherclift, expressed the opinion that "K.H. writing" specimens provided by Mr. Sinnett were likely written by Madame Blavatsky. Hodgson raised questions about the extent to which Blavatsky was assisted by confederates or plagiarized material in producing the letters that formed the basis of works like *Esoteric Buddhism*.

Later Perspectives and Interpretations

Further critical analysis has continued to question the origins of the letters and the figures they represent. Leo Klejn suggested that Madame Blavatsky's reputation was negatively impacted by psychological considerations of these occult phenomena. K. Paul Johnson, a historian of esotericism, proposed that the "Masters" cited by Blavatsky might have been idealized representations of her actual mentors. These interpretations suggest alternative frameworks for understanding the source of the Theosophical teachings contained within the letters, moving beyond the literal interpretation of direct communication from elevated spiritual beings.

Notable Quotes

“the most authoritative work of a theosophical nature ever made accessible to the public. It is simply transcendent in its importance.”
“What if these signs and wonders are proofs of something very different?... Instead of a message from beings of supernal wisdom and power, we shall have only the private thoughts of a clever but not over scrupulous woman.”
“I was enabled while in India to secure various Mahatma documents for my own examination, and after a minute and prolonged comparison of these with Madame Blavatsky's handwriting, I have not the slightest doubt that all the documents which I thus had the opportunity of examining were, with the exception of one, written by Madame Blavatsky.”
“the K.H. writing possessed by Mr. Sinnett is particularly important, because it is upon this that Esoteric Buddhism, with its large claims, is confessedly founded; and Mr. Netherclift, the calligraphic expert, has confidently expressed his opinion that the K.H. documents thus coming from Mr. Sinnett were undoubtedly written by Madame Blavatsky.”
“How far the K.H. letters received by Mr. Sinnett emanated from the brain of Madame Blavatsky, how far she was assisted in their production by confederates, how much of their substance was plagiarized from other writers, are questions which closely concern the intellectual ability of Madame Blavatsky, and which lie somewhat outside the present brief sketch.”
