Personality

Concept

The temporary, material aspect of a human being, encompassing physical form, emotions, and the memories of a single lifetime. It is contrasted with the enduring spiritual self or individuality, which persists across multiple incarnations.

Where the word comes from

The term "personality" derives from the Latin "persona," meaning a mask or character worn by an actor in ancient theatre. This etymological root underscores its theatrical, outward-facing nature, representing the role one plays in the world rather than the inner essence.

In depth

In Occultism — which divides man into seven principles, considering hiiu under the three aspects of the divine, the thinking or the rational, and the animal man — the lower quaternary or the ])urely astrophysical being; while by Individuality is meant the Higher Triad, considered as a Unity. Thus the L^rsonality embraces all the characteristics and memories of one physical life, while the Individuality is the imperishable Ego M'hich re-incarnates and clothes itself in one personality after another.

How different paths see it

Hindu
In Hindu philosophy, the personality corresponds to the temporary ego (ahamkara) and the physical and subtle bodies (koshas), which are subject to illusion (maya) and the cycle of rebirth (samsara). The true self (Atman) is distinct from this transient assemblage.
Kabbalah
The Kabbalistic concept of the Nefesh, the vital soul or life force tied to the physical body and its desires, can be seen as analogous to personality. It is the lowest of the soul's levels, concerned with earthly existence.
Christian Mystic
Christian mystics often speak of the "old self" or the ego, which must be mortified or surrendered to allow the divine presence to manifest. This ego, with its worldly attachments and self-will, aligns with the notion of personality.
Modern Non-dual
In modern non-dual thought, personality is understood as a construct of the mind, a collection of beliefs, habits, and experiences that create a sense of separate self. True realization involves seeing beyond this construct to the underlying unity.

What it means today

Blavatsky's distinction between personality and individuality resonates with a long tradition of contemplative thought that seeks to discern the ephemeral from the eternal within the human constitution. The ancient Greeks, in their understanding of prosopon, also recognized a mask, a face presented to the world, distinct from the inner being. Mircea Eliade, in his studies of shamanism and archaic religions, points to the ritualistic adoption of roles and the use of masks as a means of accessing alter-ego states or divine forces, mirroring the concept of a constructed self. Carl Jung, in his exploration of the psyche, identified the persona as the interface between the individual and society, a necessary adaptation that, if over-identified with, can lead to a loss of contact with the deeper self.

The personality, in this occult framework, is the sum of our earthly experiences, the accumulated data of a single life. It is the particular melody played on the universal instrument of consciousness for a specific duration. The memories, the attachments, the habits of thought and action – these form the intricate, often charming, sometimes burdensome, fabric of our individual narrative. But this narrative, however compelling, is but one chapter in a much larger epic. The challenge, as suggested by the contrast with "Individuality," is to engage with this personality fully, learning its lessons, expressing its unique gifts, without mistaking the role for the actor, the mask for the face beneath. It is in this dynamic interplay, this conscious awareness of the temporary nature of the self we inhabit, that the path toward recognizing the imperishable Ego, the true Individuality, begins. The personality offers the raw material for spiritual growth, the very challenges and joys that forge the soul's wisdom.
