Zecharia Sitchin was an author known for his theories on human origins, which posited that an extraterrestrial race called the Anunnaki from a planet named Nibiru were responsible for the ancient Sumerian civilization. He claimed Nibiru orbits the Sun in a 3,600-year elliptical path. Sitchin's works, which sold millions globally and were translated into numerous languages, suggested the Anunnaki genetically engineered humans as laborers for gold mining. His interpretations of ancient texts and artifacts, such as Sumerian iconography and the seal VA 243, formed the basis of these claims. He also proposed that a collision involving Nibiru and a planet called Tiamat formed Earth. He claimed that Sumerian cosmology recognized twelve celestial bodies, including Nibiru, and that ancient inscriptions detailed the Anunnaki's activities on Earth. Critics point to mistranslations of Sumerian words and symbols, arguing that Sitchin selectively used evidence and ignored contradictory findings. For instance, the Sumerian sign DIĜIR, which Sitchin translated to imply advanced technology, is understood differently by experts, and the dots on seal VA 243 are generally considered stars, not planets, with the seal itself believed to be a message from a nobleman to a servant.
