William Lilly was a prominent 17th-century English astrologer whose influential writings and predictions shaped Western astrological tradition.

William Lilly, born in 1602, rose to become England's most significant astrologer during the tumultuous 17th century. Despite a humble beginning as a farmer's son, Lilly's move to London and subsequent marriage to his former master's widow provided him with the financial means to pursue his studies in astrology. He gained considerable influence through his social and political connections, particularly during the English Civil War. Lilly's seminal work, 'Christian Astrology' (1647), became a foundational text in English for astrological study, making complex techniques accessible to a wider audience.

His annual almanacs achieved massive sales, indicating his widespread public recognition. Lilly's autobiography, published shortly before his death in 1681, offers valuable historical insights into the political landscape and notable figures of his era. Despite facing controversy and accusations, he was also championed by powerful allies, earning him nicknames like 'English Merlin' from supporters. Lilly retired to practice medicine and passed away in 1681, leaving a lasting impact on the course of Western astrology.

Early Life and Education

Born in Leicestershire in 1602, William Lilly came from a yeoman farmer family. Despite his father's financial struggles, Lilly received a robust classical education at Ashby-de-la-Zouch Grammar School. His proficiency in Latin, a skill honed under his teacher John Brinsley, proved crucial for his later astrological pursuits, as most contemporary texts were in Latin. Although his aspirations for university were thwarted by his father's poverty, Lilly secured a position as a servant and secretary in London to Gilbert Wright. After Wright's death, Lilly audaciously married his wealthy widow, Ellen, which provided him with financial independence and the leisure to dedicate himself to the study of astrology.

Astrological Career and Influence

Lilly's serious engagement with astrology began around 1632, after inheriting wealth that afforded him ample time for study and practice. He meticulously revised astrological literature and developed his own methods, particularly after studying Valentine Naibod. Lilly's astrological interpretations gained prominence during the English Civil War, where he closely observed political events. His seminal work, 'Christian Astrology' (1647), a comprehensive guide to astrological techniques, was the first of its kind printed in English and remains a classic text. His popular annual almanacs, selling tens of thousands of copies, cemented his reputation and influence across England.

Controversy and Legacy

William Lilly was a figure of considerable renown but also controversy. His astrological predictions often touched upon political matters, leading to both support from figures like Oliver Cromwell and accusations from opponents. He was investigated following the Great Fire of London due to a previous publication depicting a city in flames. Despite facing prosecution and being satirized, Lilly maintained powerful friendships, including with Bulstrode Whitelocke, to whom he dedicated 'Christian Astrology'. While some viewed him as a 'juggling wizard', others saw him as an 'English Merlin'. After the Restoration, his influence waned, and he retired to practice medicine, dying in 1681. A resurgence of interest in his work occurred in the late 20th century, highlighting his enduring impact on astrological scholarship.
