W M Flinders Petrie

William Matthew Flinders Petrie was a pivotal figure in archaeology, particularly known for his extensive work in Egypt. His career laid the groundwork for the establishment of the Petrie Museum of Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology at University College London (UCL). Initially founded as a teaching resource in 1892, the museum's collection was greatly expanded when Petrie sold his personal acquisitions to UCL in 1913. This transformed the museum into a leading repository of Egyptian artifacts outside of Egypt itself.

The museum, now part of UCL Museums and Collections, houses over 80,000 objects, recognized for its national and international importance. Petrie's excavations uncovered significant sites, including the Roman period cemeteries at Hawara, known for their mummy portraits, the city of Amarna, and the pyramid at Meydum, which yielded early evidence of mummification. The collection, first displayed in 1915, grew under Petrie's successors and was moved for safekeeping during World War II before finding its current location.

The Petrie Museum of Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology at University College London (UCL) began as a teaching collection in 1892, coinciding with the establishment of UCL's Department of Egyptian Archaeology and Philology. Initially, the collection was a donation from Amelia Edwards. A significant expansion occurred in 1913 when William Matthew Flinders Petrie, the first Edwards Professor, sold his extensive personal collections of Egyptian antiquities to UCL. This acquisition dramatically enhanced the museum's holdings, establishing it as a preeminent collection of Egyptian artifacts beyond Egypt. The collection was first made accessible to the public in June 1915, though initially it primarily served students and academics.

Flinders Petrie's career involved excavating numerous important archaeological sites in Egypt. His work included extensive exploration of the Roman Period cemeteries at Hawara, which yielded remarkable mummy portraits in the classical Roman style. He also excavated Amarna, the ancient city associated with the pharaoh Akhenaten, and the pyramid at Meydum, identified as the earliest true pyramid. At Meydum, his discoveries provided some of the earliest known evidence of mummification practices. These excavations formed the core of the collection that would become the Petrie Museum, contributing significantly to the understanding of ancient Egyptian history and funerary customs.

The Petrie Museum now holds over 80,000 objects, earning it designation as a collection of national and international importance. Its holdings include exceptional examples of Egyptian costume, such as a piece of linen dating to approximately 5000 BC and the Tarkhan dress, recognized as the world's oldest known woven garment from the fourth millennium BC. The museum also possesses extensive material from the Ptolemaic, Roman, and Islamic periods, including Britain's largest collection of Roman mummy portraits. An archive within the museum contains excavation records, correspondence, and photographs directly related to Flinders Petrie's fieldwork, alongside documents detailing the global distribution of finds.
