Sylvia Browne Lindsay Harrison

Sylvia Browne was an American author and self-proclaimed psychic and medium who gained significant public attention through regular television and radio appearances, including on "The Montel Williams Show" and "Larry King Live." She authored approximately 40 books on paranormal subjects, many of which became New York Times bestsellers, often in collaboration with other writers. Browne also hosted her own radio show and founded a Gnostic Christian church. Despite maintaining a large following until her death in 2013, Browne was widely criticized for numerous public predictions that were later found to be false, particularly concerning missing persons cases. She also faced legal issues, including a no-contest plea to securities fraud.

Born Sylvia Celeste Shoemaker, Browne grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. Her upbringing was diverse in terms of religious background, with a Catholic upbringing alongside a mother who was Episcopalian, a Lutheran grandmother, and a Jewish father. Browne stated that her spiritual journey began at age three when she started experiencing visions. She credited her grandmother, whom she described as a psychic medium, with helping her understand these experiences. Browne also mentioned a great-uncle who was a psychic medium and deeply interested in UFOs, suggesting an early exposure to esoteric and paranormal concepts within her family.

Browne began her professional work as a psychic in 1973. In 1986, she established the Society of Novus Spiritus, a Gnostic Christian church located in Campbell, California. She also led the Sylvia Browne Corporation and Sylvia Browne Enterprises. Reports indicated that her businesses generated substantial income, reportedly earning $3 million annually. Browne claimed to have experienced visions of Heaven and angels and stated she could communicate with a spirit guide named Francine, asserting her ability to perceive a wide array of "vibrational frequencies," which formed the basis of her public pronouncements and writings.

Browne was a frequent and prominent guest on various television and radio programs, where she discussed her purported psychic abilities and conducted readings for guests and callers. Her appearances often generated debate, sometimes involving skeptics. Beyond guest spots, she hosted her own online radio show on Hay House Radio, focusing on paranormal topics and readings. Browne also made occasional acting appearances, portraying herself in segments of "Haunted Lives: True Ghost Stories" and a cameo on the soap opera "The Young and the Restless."

A significant aspect of Browne's public reception was the frequent condemnation by skeptics due to numerous inaccurate predictions. Investigations and analyses of her televised statements, particularly concerning missing persons and murder cases, revealed a pattern of unreliability. For instance, studies indicated that in cases where outcomes were known, her predictions were often completely wrong. Critics pointed to specific instances where her pronouncements about missing children were demonstrably false, causing distress to families. Browne's claims of high accuracy were contradicted by these detailed examinations, leading to accusations of exploiting vulnerable individuals for financial gain. She also famously failed to accept a million-dollar paranormal challenge offered by James Randi, citing disputes over testing conditions.
