Sylvan J Muldoon

Sylvan Muldoon (1903-1969) was an American author known for his writings on astral projection, a concept he described as an out-of-body experience where an astral body separates from the physical form. Muldoon's work gained significant attention, with one scholar suggesting his popular book "The Phenomena of Astral Projection" laid the groundwork for theories later presented by L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology. Specifically, Hubbard's concept of exteriorizing the thetan and the description of a connecting cord between the astral and physical bodies closely mirrored Muldoon's popularized ideas.

Born in Wisconsin, Muldoon reported his first out-of-body experience at age 12 at a Spiritualist camp, an event that solidified his belief in the separation of bodies. He became an early pioneer in the study of OBEs, collaborating with psychic investigator Hereward Carrington. Their joint work, particularly "The Phenomena of Astral Projection," became a key text in the field. Researchers have noted similarities between Muldoon's described experiences and the phenomenon of lucid dreaming.

Sylvan Muldoon dedicated much of his work to exploring and popularizing the concept of astral projection. He defined this as an out-of-body experience (OBE) that posits the existence of an "astral body" distinct from the physical body, capable of independent travel. Muldoon's early life included an experience at age 12 that he interpreted as his first OBE, leading him to believe in the separation of a non-physical self from the corporeal form. Hugh Urban, a professor at Ohio State University, noted in a 2012 publication that Hubbard's descriptions of "exteriorizing the thetan" bear strong resemblances to the astral projection concepts popularized by Muldoon. Furthermore, Muldoon's vivid description of the astral body being tethered to the physical body by a flexible, cord-like structure was found to be nearly identical to a description featured in Hubbard's "Excalibur" vision, indicating a significant conceptual borrowing.
