Sybil Leek was an English witch, astrologer, and occult author known for her books and media appearances.

Sybil Leek, born in England in 1917, was an author, astrologer, and self-proclaimed psychic who gained prominence for her writings on occult and esoteric subjects. The BBC once referred to her as "Britain's most famous witch." She claimed a lineage connected to historical figures accused of witchcraft and described an 800-year family tradition of practicing Celtic witchcraft and occultism. After a brief early marriage and returning to live with her grandmother, she later resided in the New Forest area, where she operated antique shops. Her public persona as a witch attracted significant media attention and local curiosity, which eventually led to her emigration to the United States.

In America, Leek focused on astrology, calling it her "first love." She appeared on the television program "To Tell the Truth" in 1964 to discuss her book "A Shop in the High Street." During this period, she collaborated with parapsychologist Hans Holzer on investigations into hauntings and psychic phenomena, participating in numerous media projects. Later, she relocated to Los Angeles and connected with Israel Regardie, an expert in Kabbalah and ritual magic. Leek passed away from cancer in Florida in 1982.

Occult Beliefs and Practices

Sybil Leek presented a distinct approach to witchcraft, often contrasting with other practitioners. She notably disapproved of nudity in rituals, a practice common in Gardnerian Wicca. Furthermore, she was strongly opposed to the use of drugs within occult practices. A significant point of divergence was her belief in the efficacy of cursing, a practice many other witches rejected. Leek also asserted that she had experienced out-of-body phenomena, contributing to her unique profile within the esoteric community.

Public Persona and Media Presence

Leek's identity as a self-described witch and her eccentric habits drew considerable public and media attention. This notoriety, while potentially beneficial to the communities she lived in through increased tourism, also led to a level of discomfort among some residents due to traffic and noise. The persistent media interest eventually became a factor in her decision to leave England. After moving to the United States, she leveraged her public profile, appearing on television and collaborating with figures like Hans Holzer on programs exploring psychic phenomena and hauntings, further solidifying her presence in the public discourse on the occult.
