Sharada Dwivedi Shalini Devi Holkar

Sharada Dwivedi, who passed away in 2012, was an Indian author, historian, and researcher recognized for her extensive writings on the history and culture of India, with a particular focus on Mumbai (formerly Bombay). Her academic background included studies in commerce, economics, and library science, with additional training in Paris.

Dwivedi was deeply involved in heritage conservation efforts within Mumbai, serving on the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee and contributing to various urban design and preservation initiatives. Disillusioned with publishing practices, she established her own publishing house, Eminence Designs Pvt. Ltd., to promote diverse subjects including Bombay's history, art, architecture, and culinary traditions. Her collaborative work, 'Almond Eyes & Lotus Feet,' co-authored with Shalini Devi Holkar, was later published internationally.

Her published works spanned a range of subjects, including art, architecture, heritage, conservation, and culinary traditions. She also authored articles on conservation and urban issues related to Mumbai.

Sharada Dwivedi dedicated her career to documenting and exploring the rich tapestry of Indian history and culture, with a strong emphasis on Mumbai. Her research encompassed various facets of the city's past and present, including its architectural evolution and societal development. She developed a particular affinity for Victorian-era Mumbai and later in her life, showed a keen interest in the city's Art Deco architectural styles. Dwivedi's prolific writing career resulted in numerous books and articles covering topics such as art, architecture, interiors, heritage, conservation, and traditional cuisine and beauty practices.

Beyond her literary contributions, Dwivedi was a significant figure in Mumbai's heritage conservation landscape. She actively participated in conservation projects and held influential positions, including a role on the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee. Her commitment extended to her entrepreneurial endeavors; she founded Eminence Designs Pvt. Ltd. in the early 1990s. This publishing venture was born out of a desire to address inequities faced by authors and aimed to publish a wide array of subjects, thereby contributing to the preservation and dissemination of cultural knowledge.
