Born in 1977, John Michael Green spent his childhood moving between Indiana, Michigan, Alabama, and Florida. He attended boarding school at Indian Springs School in Alabama, where he developed friendships and experienced bullying, which contributed to his lifelong struggles with severe anxiety and obsessive–compulsive disorder. After graduating from Kenyon College with degrees in English and religious studies, Green served for six months as a student chaplain at a children's hospital. This experience, marked by the trauma of witnessing children with life-threatening illnesses, profoundly impacted him, leading him to reconsider his path and ultimately inspiring his writing career, particularly "The Fault in Our Stars."

Green began his professional writing career as an editorial assistant and production editor at Booklist magazine, where he reviewed numerous books and wrote radio essays. During this period, he faced a severe mental health crisis that led him to take a leave of absence and seek treatment. Upon returning, he focused on writing his debut novel, "Looking for Alaska" (2005). This coming-of-age story, partly inspired by his boarding school experiences, received critical acclaim and the prestigious Michael L. Printz Award, significantly boosting its sales. He serves as a trustee for Partners In Health, focusing on reducing maternal mortality in Sierra Leone and combating tuberculosis worldwide. His second nonfiction book, "Everything Is Tuberculosis," is scheduled for release in March 2025.
