Cass Elliot, a singer with The Mamas & the Papas, had a notable solo career and television presence.

Ellen Naomi Cohen, professionally known as Cass Elliot, was an American singer, songwriter, and actress, most famous as a member of the folk-rock group The Mamas & the Papas. Born in 1941, she adopted the name Cass Elliot in her youth. Her career began in the early 1960s with folk groups like the Triumvirate and the Big 3, eventually leading to the formation of the Mugwumps. After the Mugwumps disbanded, she joined forces with John and Michelle Phillips, and Denny Doherty to form The Mamas & the Papas in 1965. The group achieved significant success with hits like "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday." Elliot was recognized for her powerful voice and charismatic stage presence, earning a Grammy Award for "Monday, Monday." Following the group's dissolution in 1968, she pursued a solo career, releasing several albums and performing extensively, including a notable Las Vegas debut that faced considerable challenges. She also became a familiar face on television through variety specials and talk show appearances. Elliot passed away in 1974 and was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Early Life and Name Change

Born Ellen Naomi Cohen in Baltimore, Maryland, Cass Elliot's early life was marked by financial instability for her family. Her parents, Philip and Bess Cohen, were of Russian-Jewish immigrant descent. She had a brother and a younger sister who also pursued music. The family lived in Alexandria, Virginia, and later returned to Baltimore. Elliot adopted the name "Cass" in high school, possibly inspired by actress Peggy Cass. She later adopted the surname "Elliot" in memory of a deceased friend. Her interest in acting began during her time at Forest Park High School in Baltimore, where she secured a role in a summer stock production. She left high school before graduating to move to New York City and pursue acting.

Musical Beginnings and The Mamas & the Papas

After relocating to New York to pursue an entertainment career, Elliot toured in the musical "The Music Man." She later moved to the Washington D.C. area, attending American University, and became involved in the burgeoning folk music scene. She performed with groups such as the Triumvirate and the Big 3. In 1964, she joined the Mugwumps with Zal Yanovsky and Denny Doherty. Following the Mugwumps' brief existence, Elliot performed solo before Denny Doherty invited her to join John and Michelle Phillips, forming The Mamas & the Papas in 1965. A popular, though possibly apocryphal, story suggests her vocal range expanded after being struck by a pipe, an event she herself confirmed in a 1968 interview.

Solo Career and Television Appearances

After The Mamas & the Papas disbanded in 1968, Cass Elliot launched a solo singing career. Her 1968 solo album "Dream a Little Dream of Me" featured a notable rendition of the title track. In October 1968, she made her solo debut headlining in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace. This engagement was fraught with difficulties, including a severe pre-show diet that led to health issues and a poorly received opening night performance, which attracted harsh critical reviews. Despite these challenges, Elliot continued her career, appearing in television specials like "The Mama Cass Television Program" and "Don't Call Me Mama Anymore." She was a frequent guest on various talk and variety shows throughout the early 1970s, including "The Tonight Show," where she guest-hosted, and "The Midnight Special."
