In later years, Munsch publicly shared his health struggles, including a stroke in 2008, diagnoses of obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder, and a period of cocaine addiction and recovery from alcoholism. In 2021, he announced a dementia diagnosis, leading him to explore medical assistance in dying, while also expressing a desire for his remaining unpublished stories to be released posthumously.
