Robert Maynard Pirsig (1928–2017) was an American author and philosopher recognized for his seminal works, particularly "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values" (1974) and "Lila: An Inquiry into Morals" (1991). Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Pirsig displayed exceptional intellect from a young age, skipping several grades. His academic journey included studies in biochemistry and philosophy at various institutions, including the University of Minnesota and Banaras Hindu University in India. His early academic career saw him teaching creative writing at Montana State University and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Pirsig's writing career gained significant traction in the late 1960s when he developed the concept for "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." This book, based on a motorcycle journey with his son, delves into his philosophical concept of "Quality" and its connection to reality, interwoven with a narrative of his personal struggles and intellectual inquiries.
