Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Louis Stevenson, the Scottish author renowned for "Treasure Island," spent the final years of his life in Samoa. Born in Edinburgh, he traveled extensively before settling in the South Pacific with his family in 1888. In 1890, he purchased land and built a mansion named Villa Vailima near a village of the same name. The house, completed by 1891, featured amenities like a library and the island's sole working fireplace, and was adorned with art and furniture, including a Rodin sculpture and a tablecloth gifted by Queen Victoria.

Stevenson was well-regarded by the local Samoan population, who affectionately called him "Tusitala," meaning "Teller of Tales." He was known for his critical stance against colonial rule and his support for Samoan indigenous political interests. Stevenson passed away in 1894 and was interred on Mount Vaea, overlooking his home. Following his death, the villa served as official residences for various colonial administrators before being damaged by cyclones. In 1994, after renovations, it reopened as the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, funded by overseas donations and managed by a board including Samoan government representatives.

He actively engaged with the community, demonstrating a critical perspective on colonial governance and advocating for the political aspirations of the indigenous Samoan people. His death in 1894 occurred while he was residing in Samoa, and he was buried on Mount Vaea, a location that offers a view of his former home. The villa, after Stevenson's passing, transitioned through various administrative uses before its eventual designation as a museum.

The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, located in his former Samoan residence, Villa Vailima, was established to commemorate the author's life and legacy. Following significant renovations after cyclone damage in the early 1990s, the museum officially opened its doors on December 5, 1994. Its founding was made possible through financial contributions from international donors. The museum's collection, while dedicated to Stevenson's life, is noted for containing a significant number of acquired period pieces and replicas rather than exclusively original items associated with the author. Visitors can also access Stevenson's grave site on Mount Vaea, which is reachable from the museum grounds.
