Denver, Colorado was founded in 1858. It is located at the intersection of the plains and the mountains. It is the state’s political capital and largest city. Denver began as a mining settlement, where gold prospectors panned gold from the sands of nearby Cherry Creek and the South Platte River. However, the prospectors discovered that the gold deposits in these streams were discouragingly poor and quickly exhausted.
