John of Patmos is traditionally identified as the author of the Book of Revelation, exiled to the island.

The figure known as John of Patmos is traditionally recognized as the author of the Book of Revelation. The text itself, specifically Revelation 1:9, indicates that the author was on the island of Patmos. Some biblical historians suggest this was a result of exile due to Roman persecution under Emperor Domitian.

While early Christian tradition often equated the author of Revelation with John the Apostle, a disciple of Jesus, this view has been debated since medieval times. Some scholars, noting differences in language and theological perspective between Revelation and the Gospel of John, have proposed that the author was a different individual, possibly John the Presbyter, a companion of Jesus. Modern scholarship largely supports the view that the author of Revelation is distinct from John the Apostle.

Exile on Patmos

The author of the Book of Revelation is believed by tradition to have been exiled to the island of Patmos. This banishment is thought to have occurred during a period of persecution under the Roman emperor Domitian in the late first century. The biblical verse Revelation 1:9 states, "I, John, both your brother and companion in tribulation...was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ." Biblical scholar Adela Yarbro Collins notes that banishment was a common Roman punishment for offenses, including practices like magic and astrology, and that prophecy, especially with political implications, could be seen as a threat to Roman authority. Tertullian, an early Christian writer, also recorded a tradition that John was banished to Rome and plunged into boiling oil, surviving unharmed.

Authorship Debates

The Book of Revelation identifies its author simply as "John." For a long time, this was widely assumed to be John the Apostle, one of Jesus's disciples, who was also traditionally credited with writing the Gospel of John. The earliest writer to explicitly link the author of Revelation with John the Evangelist was Justin Martyr in the early second century. However, other early Christian figures like Dionysius of Alexandria and Eusebius of Caesarea observed significant linguistic and theological divergences between Revelation and the Gospel of John. These differences led them to question the unified authorship and even advocate for Revelation's exclusion from the biblical canon. Papias, an early Christian writer, also seemed to distinguish between John the Evangelist and John the Elder. Consequently, many contemporary biblical scholars now contend that John the Elder was the actual author of Revelation, differentiating him from John the Apostle.
