N. T. Rama Rao was a legendary Indian actor, politician, and filmmaker, revered for his divine roles and founding a regional political party.

Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, widely known as NTR, was a towering figure in Indian cinema and politics. He starred in over 300 films, primarily in Telugu, earning acclaim for his portrayals of Hindu deities like Krishna, Shiva, and Rama, which led to him being called a "messiah of the masses." His acting prowess was recognized with prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri and multiple National Film Awards. Beyond acting, Rao ventured into filmmaking as a director, producer, and screenwriter. He was also a significant political leader, founding the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982 and serving multiple terms as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. His political career aimed to champion a distinct Telugu cultural identity and influenced national politics.

Acting Career and Deific Portrayals

NTR's acting career began in 1949, but his breakthrough came in the mid-1950s. He rose to prominence in the 1960s through his iconic portrayals of Hindu gods, most notably Krishna, Shiva, and Rama. These roles solidified his status as a cultural icon and a "universally-renowned star of acting." He was recognized as one of Indian cinema's earliest method actors, dedicating himself to embodying characters realistically, even learning classical dance for a role at age 40. His filmography includes critically acclaimed works like 'Pathala Bhairavi,' 'Malliswari,' 'Mayabazar,' and 'Nartanasala,' several of which were recognized at international film festivals and listed among India's greatest films. He also explored antagonistic and heroic roles later in his career.

Filmmaking and Production

Beyond his acting, NTR was a multifaceted filmmaker. He transitioned into screenwriting, authoring scripts for his own movies and for others, despite lacking formal training. He also established his own production house, National Art Theater Private Limited, through which he produced numerous films. He founded Ramakrishna Studios in memory of his eldest son. His production ventures were instrumental in funding film production and distribution, and he actively promoted the construction of cinemas. One of his co-produced films, 'Ummadi Kutumbam,' was nominated for the Moscow Film Festival.

Political Leadership and Cultural Advocacy

NTR's influence extended significantly into politics. In 1982, he founded the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the first regional political party in Andhra Pradesh. He served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for four terms, totaling seven years between 1983 and 1995. His political agenda strongly advocated for a unique Telugu cultural identity, seeking to differentiate it from the broader Madras State. On a national level, he played a key role in forming the National Front, a coalition of non-Congress parties that briefly governed India. His political endeavors brought substantial shifts to India's political landscape.
