Born Dileep Kumar Rajagopala on January 6, 1967, in Madras, Tamil Nadu, A. R. Rahman's early life was steeped in music. His father, R. K. Shekhar, was a composer and conductor for Malayalam films. Rahman began his musical training on the piano at the age of four and assisted his father in the studio. Following his father's death when Rahman was nine, the family relied on renting out musical equipment. Despite academic challenges due to his musical pursuits, Rahman continued his education, eventually forming a band with classmates. He later dropped out of school to dedicate himself fully to a music career, mastering instruments like the keyboard, piano, synthesizer, harmonium, and guitar. His early training also included working with various composers and touring internationally, even obtaining a scholarship to Trinity College London.

During his studies in Madras, A. R. Rahman converted to Islam with his family in 1989, at the age of 23. This spiritual journey coincided with a significant personal decision to change his birth name, Dileep Kumar. Rahman expressed that his birth name did not resonate with his self-image. Following a suggestion from a Hindu astrologer for names like 'Abdul Rahman' and 'Abdul Rahim,' he felt an immediate connection with 'Abdul Rahman.' His mother later added 'Allah Rakha' to his name, inspired by a dream, resulting in his current name, Allah Rakha Rahman.

A. R. Rahman's professional music career commenced with composing jingles for advertisements and scores for documentaries before his breakthrough with the 1992 Tamil film Roja. He established Panchathan Record Inn, a state-of-the-art recording studio, which became a cornerstone of his innovative work. His soundtracks are celebrated for their unique fusion of Western classical music, Carnatic and Tamil folk traditions, jazz, and rock.
