Rebecca F. Kuang, born in China in 1996 and later immigrating to the United States, is a celebrated author primarily of fantasy novels. She holds advanced degrees in Chinese studies from Cambridge and Oxford Universities, and is currently pursuing a PhD at Yale. Kuang's literary career began with the acclaimed "Poppy War" trilogy, a grimdark fantasy series inspired by mid-20th century Chinese history and conflict. Her novel "Babel, or the Necessity of Violence," an alternate history set in 1830s Oxford, achieved significant commercial success, topping The New York Times Best Seller list and winning the Nebula Award for Best Novel. Born in Guangzhou, China, in 1996, Rebecca F. Kuang immigrated to the United States at a young age. Her academic path led her to the United Kingdom as a Marshall Scholar, where she earned Master's degrees in Chinese studies from both Cambridge and Oxford. Kuang's background also includes extensive debate experience. She later returned to the U.S. to pursue a PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University. Her early reading interests included adult fantasy, influenced by authors like China Miéville.

Kuang's debut was "The Poppy War," published in 2018, initiating a trilogy of Chinese military fantasy novels. This series is noted for its grimdark tone and draws heavily from mid-20th century Chinese history, particularly the Second Sino-Japanese War, with an atmosphere reminiscent of the Song dynasty. The trilogy explores themes of war, survival, and the devastating consequences of conflict. "The Poppy War" received favorable reviews and was recognized by Time magazine as one of the 100 best fantasy books. The subsequent books, "The Dragon Republic" and "The Burning God," continued the narrative, concluding the series with a focus on civil war and its aftermath.

Published in 2022, "Babel, or the Necessity of Violence" is an alternate history novel set in a fantastical 1830s Oxford.
