Robert James Waller's "The Bridges of Madison County" is a fictional romance novel about a brief affair, becoming a global bestseller.

Robert James Waller's 1992 novel, "The Bridges of Madison County," also known as "Love in Black and White," is a fictional romance story about a married Italian-American woman in 1960s Iowa who has a four-day affair with a visiting photographer. Despite being presented as true, the narrative is entirely fabricated. The book achieved immense popularity, selling 50 million copies worldwide and becoming one of the best-selling books of the 20th century. It was later adapted into a successful 1995 film directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Meryl Streep, and a 2013 musical.

Genesis of the Novel

The concept for "The Bridges of Madison County" emerged unexpectedly for Robert James Waller in the early 1990s. While on leave from his teaching position at the University of Northern Iowa, Waller was engaged in photographing the Mississippi River. During this time, he also decided to capture images of the covered bridges in Madison County, Iowa. This photographic excursion, combined with a song he had written years prior about a woman named Francesca and her aspirations, sparked the idea for the novel. Waller completed the manuscript in just eleven days. Post-completion, Waller reflected that he believed the character of Francesca Johnson bore a physical resemblance to his wife, Georgia, and that he had based the character on her.

Literary Comparisons and Reception

Critics have drawn parallels between Waller's novel and other works, with Marc Eliot suggesting it modernizes Noël Coward's play "Still Life." Brigitte Weeks noted its appeal to "middle-aged, world-weary people," likening its reach to James A. Michener but with more explicit sexuality. Comparisons were also made to Erich Segal's "Love Story" regarding plot and style. While some reviewers, like Peter Travers, found Waller's prose reminiscent of Walt Whitman but akin to a greeting card, others saw it in the tradition of "great romantic crocks." The novel's prose was also likened to Richard Bach's "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" and the style of Mills & Boon publications. "Publishers Weekly" described it as "Quietly powerful and thoroughly credible," while "Entertainment Weekly" called it "a short, poignant story, moving precisely because it has the ragged edges of reality." The book spent 164 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, reaching number one.
