Michael W Cuneo

Michael W. Cuneo, a Canadian-born author, previously served as a professor of sociology and anthropology at Fordham University before his retirement. Born in the early 1950s, he began his career working as a taxi driver in Toronto, a profession also held by his father. Cuneo pursued higher education, earning a doctorate in the study of religion from the University of Toronto in 1988, under the supervision of Roger O’Toole. He then moved to New York City to join the faculty at Fordham University.

Cuneo's early academic works, such as "Catholics Against the Church" and "The Sociology of Religion: An Organizational Bibliography," were primarily intended for scholarly readers. However, his 1997 book, "The Smoke of Satan: Conservative and Traditionalist Dissent in Contemporary American Catholicism," marked a shift towards a more accessible style, aiming to engage a broader audience while maintaining academic rigor. His subsequent publications explored a range of controversial and often dark subjects, including exorcism, murder, and redemption.
