Linear B was the writing system used for Mycenaean Greek, appearing around 1450 BC and predating the Greek alphabet. It is an adaptation of the undeciphered Linear A script. The script was primarily used for administrative purposes in Mycenaean palace archives, found at sites like Knossos and Pylos. It features approximately 87 syllabic signs and over 100 ideograms representing objects. The use of Linear B ceased with the collapse of Mycenaean civilization during the Late Bronze Age, leading into a period with no written records.

In 1952, Michael Ventris, an English architect and linguist, successfully deciphered Linear B, building on the work of Alice Kober. This achievement made Linear B the only deciphered script from the Bronze Age Aegean, unlike Linear A and other contemporary scripts. The decipherment involved understanding the phonetic values of syllabic signs and the semantic meaning of ideograms. The script's structure and phonetic representations have been standardized through international colloquia.

The decipherment of Linear B in 1952 by Michael Ventris marked a significant breakthrough in understanding Mycenaean civilization. Ventris, an architect with no formal linguistic training, approached the problem methodically, building upon the foundational research of Alice Kober. While the script was mainly confined to these official contexts, its signs also appeared on trade objects. The complexity of the script includes various sign categories, such as syllabic signs with phonetic values, ideograms, and special or unconfirmed signs whose values remain debated. The standardized representation of these signs has been a subject of international scholarly effort since the mid-20th century.

The syllabic signs of Linear B represent approximations of sounds, generally conforming to a V or CV (consonant-vowel) structure. Certain signs represent diphthongs or labialized consonants, and distinctions between voiced, unvoiced, and aspirated consonants were not consistently marked, though these distinctions existed in spoken Mycenaean Greek. The script also employed specific series for labialized velar consonants (the 'q' series) and semivowels (the 'j' and 'w' series), which have parallels in later Greek phonology. Consonants like initial 's' or final nasals and liquids were often omitted in writing. The structure of Linear B reflects an early stage of the Greek language, offering insights into its phonological and grammatical development before the classical period.
