Melody Beattie was an American author recognized for her significant contributions to the self-help genre, particularly concerning codependent relationships. Born in Minnesota in 1948, her early life was marked by trauma, including abuse and substance addiction, which she later overcame. After graduating high school, she pursued a career as an addiction counselor. It was through her work with women whose partners were in alcoholism treatment that she identified and began to research the pervasive nature of codependency.

Beattie's extensive writing career resulted in numerous books, including the highly successful "Codependent No More." She played a key role in popularizing the concept of codependency, making complex psychological ideas accessible to a wide audience. Her work, alongside that of other authors, helped to explain the theories of psychiatrist Timmen L. Cermak. Although her early books were often associated with the 12-step program Co-Dependents Anonymous, they were not officially connected.

Throughout her life, Beattie experienced personal challenges, including multiple divorces and the tragic loss of her son. Her health declined in her later years, and she passed away in Los Angeles in 2025 at the age of 76, following a wildfire evacuation.

Born Melody Lynn Vaillancourt in Ramsey, Minnesota, on May 26, 1948, Beattie's childhood in Saint Paul was difficult. She endured sexual abuse from a stranger at a young age and witnessed physical abuse directed at her siblings by their mother. These experiences contributed to her early struggles with substance abuse, as she began drinking at 12 and became an alcoholic by 13, progressing to drug addiction by age 18. Despite these challenges, she managed to graduate from high school with honors. However, her addiction led to her involvement in pharmacy robberies, resulting in an arrest and subsequent treatment for drug dependency.

Beattie established a career as a licensed addiction counselor. Her professional observations, particularly while counseling women married to men undergoing alcoholism treatment, highlighted the widespread issue of codependency. This insight spurred her to dedicate her research and writing to the subject. She authored 18 books, including seminal works like "Codependent No More" and "Beyond Codependency." Beattie, alongside other authors, was instrumental in making the work of psychiatrist Timmen L. Cermak accessible, effectively popularizing the concept of codependency for the general public. Her book "Codependent No More," published in 1986, achieved significant commercial success, selling millions of copies.

Beattie's personal life involved several marriages, all of which ended in divorce. She had children from her marriages, including a son who tragically died in a skiing accident in 1991. Her grief over this loss was later explored in her 1995 book, "The Lessons of Love." Her final years were marked by declining health. In January 2025, she was evacuated from her Malibu home due to wildfires and moved to her daughter's residence in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, where she died of heart failure on February 27, 2025, at the age of 76.
