Cameron was an artist, poet, and occultist who followed Thelema and was married to rocket pioneer Jack Parsons.

Marjorie Cameron Parsons Kimmel, known professionally as Cameron, was an American artist, poet, actress, and occultist deeply involved in Thelema. Born in Iowa in 1922, she served in the Navy during World War II before settling in Pasadena, California. There, she met Jack Parsons, a fellow Thelemite and rocket pioneer, who believed she was an "elemental" woman he had invoked during sex magic rituals known as the Babalon Working. They married in 1946, and Parsons influenced her immersion in Thelema and occultism.

Following Parsons' death in a 1952 explosion, which Cameron suspected was an assassination, she formed an interracial occult group called The Children in Beaumont, dedicated to sex magic rituals aimed at creating "moon children." The group disbanded due to Cameron's increasingly apocalyptic pronouncements. She later moved back to Los Angeles, becoming part of the avant-garde art scene and befriending figures like Kenneth Anger and Curtis Harrington, appearing in their films. Cameron also lived in various locations throughout the 1950s and 60s, gave birth to a daughter, Crystal Eve Kimmel, and continued to create art and poetry despite health issues. She passed away from cancer in 1995, with her artistic recognition growing posthumously.

Early Life and Naval Service

Born Marjorie Cameron in Belle Plaine, Iowa, in 1922, she grew up during the Great Depression. She excelled in art, English, and drama in school but was considered rebellious. After her family relocated to Davenport, she worked as a display artist. In 1943, she joined the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service in the U.S. Navy, serving as a cartographer and later a wardrobe mistress for propaganda films. During her service, she met Winston Churchill and Hollywood stars. A court-martial for going AWOL to see her injured brother resulted in confinement, though she received an honorable discharge in 1945. She then moved to Pasadena, California, to join her family working at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Relationship with Jack Parsons and Thelema

In Pasadena, Cameron met rocket scientist Jack Parsons, a prominent Thelemite and head of the Agape Lodge of the O.T.O. Parsons believed Cameron was the "elemental" woman he had invoked during sex magic rituals known as the Babalon Working. They quickly formed a relationship, marrying in 1946. Despite her initial aversion to religion, Parsons introduced Cameron to Thelema and occult practices, giving her the magical name "Candida." Their relationship was dynamic, marked by Parsons' influence on her occult interests, including her eventual study of astral projection and occult texts. They experienced periods of separation and reconciliation, with Cameron visiting Mexico and Parsons living separately before they reunited.

Occult Pursuits and Artistic Career

After Jack Parsons' death in a 1952 explosion, which Cameron believed was an assassination, she established "The Children," a multi-racial occult group in Beaumont focused on sex magic rituals to manifest "moon children." The group dissolved due to growing concerns over Cameron's apocalyptic predictions. Returning to Los Angeles, she became a fixture in the avant-garde art community, befriending filmmakers like Kenneth Anger and Curtis Harrington, and appearing in their films. She also worked with other artists and lived in various locations, including Joshua Tree and San Francisco. Cameron gave birth to a daughter, Crystal Eve, in 1955. Throughout her life, she pursued her art and poetry, which gained wider recognition after her death. She continued her esoteric studies and creative work until her death from cancer in 1995.
