Marko Pogačnik is a Slovenian artist and author known for his holistic art, earth healing methods, and public commissions.
Marko Pogačnik, born in 1944, is a Slovenian artist and author who graduated from the Academy of Arts in Ljubljana in 1967. He was a founding member of the neo-avantgarde OHO art movement, which also included Tomaž Šalamun and Slavoj Žižek. By the 1980s, Pogačnik shifted towards a holistic artistic perspective. He developed a practice he calls 'lithopuncture,' which involves placing pillars on specific landscape points to facilitate earth healing, drawing a parallel to acupuncture.
His contributions extend beyond art to national symbolism; he designed the coat of arms for the Republic of Slovenia in 1991. Later, in 2006, he became involved with the Movement for Justice and Development. In 1998, he co-founded the Lifenet movement with his daughter Ana, a group characterized by scholars as "typical New Age." Pogačnik resides and works in Šempas, in the lower Vipava Valley. His public art includes numerous monuments commissioned by Nova Gorica, such as a significant piece commemorating the millennium of Gorica and Solkan's first mention, located in the town's main square. Another notable installation, 'Hologram of Europe,' comprising monuments and birch trees, was erected in Ljubljana in 2008.
Artistic Evolution and Earth Healing
Following his formal artistic education at the Academy of Arts in Ljubljana and his involvement in the OHO movement, Marko Pogačnik's artistic trajectory evolved significantly from the 1980s onwards. He began to integrate a holistic worldview into his creative practice. A key development in this phase was his conceptualization and practice of 'lithopuncture.' This method involves identifying and utilizing specific points on the landscape, referred to as 'lithopuncture' points, and placing pillars or other structures upon them. Pogačnik describes this practice as a form of earth healing, analogous to the principles of acupuncture applied to the terrestrial environment. This approach signifies a departure from conventional artistic mediums, focusing instead on the energetic and spiritual qualities of the natural world.
Public Works and Sociopolitical Engagement
Marko Pogačnik's influence is also evident in public and national spheres. In 1991, a pivotal year for Slovenia, he was commissioned to create the official coat of arms for the newly independent Republic of Slovenia, a symbol of national identity. His engagement with sociopolitical movements led him to join the Movement for Justice and Development in 2006, an organization associated with then-President Janez Drnovšek. Furthermore, in 1998, he established the Lifenet movement alongside his daughter Ana. This initiative has been identified by academic observers as representative of 'New Age' phenomena. Pogačnik's artistic output continues with significant public monument commissions, particularly in Nova Gorica, and the prominent installation 'Hologram of Europe' in Ljubljana.
