The exact identity and origin of Manilius are uncertain, with ancient writers not mentioning him and later scholars suggesting diverse backgrounds, including Asiatic Greek, African, or from Roman Syria. His poem is noted for its extensive learning and representation of advanced ancient astrological views. Manilius's style is characterized by metrical correctness and witty hexameters, with frequent imitations of Lucretius. The Astronomica is significant for introducing the astrological system of 'houses,' which links celestial movements with terrestrial affairs, a concept that, while predated by a horoscope from around 20 BCE, became a cornerstone of astrological interpretation.
