William Cavendish, Earl of Devonshire, played a crucial role in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 by co-authoring the 'Invitation to William,' which aimed to exclude Catholics from the monarchy and shift power towards Parliament. This event marked a significant political ascendancy for the family. From 1688 until around 1887, various Cavendishes held high political offices, solidifying their influence alongside other major noble families. The family established several peerages, including the Dukedom of Newcastle and the Barony of Chesham, and through marriage, connections to the Dukedom of Portland were formed.

The current head of the family is Peregrine Cavendish, the 12th Duke of Devonshire. The family has been associated with Chatsworth since 1549, maintaining a long-standing connection to the property and its upkeep.
