Peter Ulrich is a multi-instrumentalist, author, and founding member of Dead Can Dance, known for his solo work and collaborations.

Peter Lawrence Ulrich, born August 29, 1958, is a British musician and author with a diverse career spanning multiple genres. Initially a drummer in blues-soul bands, he joined Dead Can Dance in 1982, contributing to their early recordings and touring extensively with them. During the 1980s, he also made contributions to This Mortal Coil and other 4AD label artists.

Ulrich launched a solo career in 1990 with a vinyl single, followed by his debut album 'Pathways and Dawns' in 1999, which received significant critical acclaim. He released a second solo album, 'Enter The Mysterium,' in 2005. He later formed The Peter Ulrich Collaboration, a project that involved numerous musicians and produced three albums. In recent years, he has collaborated with artists like Lisa Tenzin-Dolma on the album 'Echoes' and contributed to various compilation series. In 2022, he published his memoir, 'Drumming with Dead Can Dance and Parallel Adventures,' with a novel and companion soundtrack planned.

Musical Beginnings and Dead Can Dance

Peter Ulrich began his musical journey in the early 1980s, honing his skills as a self-taught drummer in blues-soul bands on the London circuit. His career took a significant turn in 1982 when he met Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, subsequently joining them to form Dead Can Dance. He played drums and percussion on the band's seminal first album and EP, 'The Garden of the Arcane Delights,' as well as later albums like 'Within the Realm of a Dying Sun' and 'Spiritchaser.' Ulrich toured with Dead Can Dance internationally between 1983 and 1990, including their initial North American tour. His involvement extended to BBC Radio 1 John Peel Show sessions, further cementing his early contributions to the band's distinctive sound.

Solo Career and Collaborations

In 1990, Ulrich released his first solo recording, a double A-sided vinyl single featuring his compositions. His debut solo album, 'Pathways and Dawns,' emerged in 1999, noted for its extensive arrangement and production by Brendan Perry. The album garnered praise, with one review suggesting it evoked a sound akin to The Beatles if they had been signed to the 4AD label. A second solo album, 'Enter The Mysterium,' followed in 2005. He later initiated The Peter Ulrich Collaboration, a project involving a large ensemble of musicians that resulted in three albums. Ulrich has also contributed to various other artists' works and compilation albums, notably collaborating with Lisa Tenzin-Dolma on the 'Echoes' album.

Authorial Debut and Literary Pursuits

Beyond his extensive musical career, Peter Ulrich ventured into authorship, publishing his memoir 'Drumming with Dead Can Dance and Parallel Adventures' in 2022. This work offers insights into his experiences within the music industry and his parallel life journeys. The memoir was released by Red Hen Press. Ulrich has also indicated plans for his first novel, a project he intends to complement with a companion soundtrack album, further extending his creative output into new artistic territories.
