LeeHong Feng Shui

Born in Taipei in February 1949, Liu Yong is an educator and author of Taiwanese-American heritage. He founded Shui Yun Zhai Cultural Enterprise and has supported the construction of numerous schools in rural China. His writings have gained international recognition, being translated into several languages and incorporated into educational curricula in mainland China and Taiwan. Liu has also been a prominent lecturer on educational themes across Asia and has hosted television programs. His artistic career includes significant exhibitions and his works are held in major museums in China and Germany.

Liu's artistic development was shaped by his classical Chinese art training under masters like Huang Jun-Bi and Lin Yushan, combined with his Western art education. He developed a unique style that blends traditional techniques with innovative methods, such as spraying ink on textured collages and incorporating elements of Pointillism. His personal life experiences, including early childhood losses, have profoundly influenced his art, often leading him to depict nighttime scenes. Liu Yong was born and raised in Taipei, experiencing significant childhood adversities including the loss of his father at age nine and a house fire at thirteen. He pursued higher education at National Taiwan Normal University, earning a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts in 1972. During his undergraduate years, he achieved recognition in art exhibitions. Following his graduation, he began his career as an art teacher and soon gained prominence in the art world, participating in significant art exhibitions. His early career also included a notable stint hosting a television quiz show and working as a reporter and producer for China Television.

Liu Yong's artistic style is a synthesis of traditional Chinese painting techniques and Western art influences. Apprenticed to renowned artists Huang Jun-Bi and Lin Yushan, he mastered landscape, bird, and flower painting, while also studying classical masterpieces. His education in the United States and his background in literature further contributed to his unique approach. Liu developed an innovative technique involving spraying ink onto wrinkled paper collages, integrating this with the 'boneless' brushwork characteristic of bird and flower painting, textural strokes inspired by ancient masters, and a form of Pointillism influenced by Impressionism. His personal history, particularly the profound impact of early life challenges, frequently informs his work, often manifesting in his depictions of nocturnal landscapes.

Beyond his artistic endeavors, Liu Yong has made substantial contributions to education and cultural preservation. He founded Shui Yun Zhai Cultural Enterprise and has been instrumental in funding the construction of over forty schools in rural China, demonstrating a commitment to improving educational access.
