Sarah Joanna Dennis Balliett, known by her pen name L. Dow Balliett, was an American writer and influential figure in the development of modern numerology. She founded and served as the first president of the Women's Research Club in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and held leadership roles in numerous other organizations. These included being the first president of The Round Table Club in DuBois, Pennsylvania, and the first president of the Atlantic County Historical Society. She also led the Women's Homeopathic Club of Atlantic City for seven years and was involved in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Her civic engagement extended to serving as principal of the School of Psychology and Physical Culture.

Literary and Artistic Pursuits

Balliett's literary output spanned various subjects, including music, mysticism, movement therapies, and occultism. Her books explored the philosophical implications of numbers and vibrations, aiming to guide readers toward success and wisdom. In addition to her solo works, she co-edited 'Early History of Atlantic County, New Jersey: Record of the First Year's work of Atlantic County's Historical Society' in 1915. Beyond her writing, Balliett was also an artist who created portraits and was invited to exhibit her work at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.
