L. Dow Balliett

Sarah Joanna Dennis Balliett, known by her pen name L. Dow Balliett, was an American writer and influential figure in the development of modern numerology. Born in 1847, she dedicated herself to philosophical and civic pursuits throughout her life, embodying her Quaker mother's motto to improve every place she touched. Balliett was an active clubwoman, founding and leading several organizations, including the Women's Research Club and the Atlantic County Historical Society. She also served as principal of the School of Psychology and Physical Culture in Atlantic City.

Balliett's most significant contribution was her work in numerology, for which she has been called "The First Mother of Numerology." Her writings explored the relationship between numbers, their inherent vibrations, tones, and colors, often linking these concepts to success, wisdom, and physical well-being. She authored several books on these topics, including 'How to attain success through the strength of vibration' and 'The philosophy of numbers; their tone and colors.' Her work also touched on mysticism and occultism, reflecting a broader interest in esoteric philosophy.

L. Dow Balliett is recognized as the creator of the modern style of numerology. Her approach delved into the vibrational qualities of numbers, exploring their connection to concepts such as tone and color. Balliett authored several foundational texts that outlined her system, including 'How to attain success through the strength of vibration; a System of Numbers as Taught by Pythagoras' (1904), 'The philosophy of numbers; their tone and colors' (1908), and 'Nature's Symphony, Or, Lessons in Number Vibration' (1911). These works established her as a leading authority in the field, with later scholars referring to her as "The First Mother of Numerology."

Beyond her esoteric contributions, Balliett was a highly active and influential clubwoman. She founded and served as the first president of the Women's Research Club in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and held leadership roles in numerous other organizations. These included being the first president of The Round Table Club in DuBois, Pennsylvania, and the first president of the Atlantic County Historical Society. She also led the Women's Homeopathic Club of Atlantic City for seven years and was involved in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Her civic engagement extended to serving as principal of the School of Psychology and Physical Culture.

Balliett's literary output spanned various subjects, including music, mysticism, movement therapies, and occultism. Her books explored the philosophical implications of numbers and vibrations, aiming to guide readers toward success and wisdom. In addition to her solo works, she co-edited 'Early History of Atlantic County, New Jersey: Record of the First Year's work of Atlantic County's Historical Society' in 1915. Beyond her writing, Balliett was also an artist who created portraits and was invited to exhibit her work at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.
