Early Life and Education

Born in Bedfordshire, Kevin McCloud was raised in Toddington. He attended Dunstable Grammar School before pursuing a period working on a farm in Tuscany and studying singing in Florence. Despite an offer for a longer course in Italy, he returned to the UK to study at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Initially focusing on languages, he later shifted his studies to philosophy and ultimately settled on the history of art and architecture. During his time at Cambridge, McCloud was a member of the Footlights comedy ensemble, collaborating with figures like Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie as a costume and set designer.

Design and Architectural Career

Following his graduation, McCloud trained as a theatre designer, contributing to various productions, including experimental music groups. He then established his own lighting design practice and manufacturing company, 'McCloud Lighting,' which at its peak employed 26 people. His design portfolio includes significant commissions such as the ornate vegetable-themed ceiling in the food halls at Harrods, alongside numerous projects with J.J. Desmond Interiors. His lighting designs can also be found in notable institutions like Ely Cathedral, Edinburgh Castle, the Savoy Hotel, and the Dorchester Hotel. The program showcases unique and complex home construction projects. He has also written and presented spin-off series like Grand Designs Indoors and Grand Designs Abroad, demonstrating fluency in French and Italian in the latter. Property Development and Sustainability Focus

In 2007, McCloud founded HAB Housing Limited (Happiness, Architecture, Beauty), a company focused on developing housing projects. He led efforts to build a HAB development on the outskirts of Swindon, which aimed for environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. This project, known as The Triangle, involved a 42-home scheme on a former caravan park site and received backing from the Homes and Communities Agency. The development process was documented in a Grand Designs special. HAB Housing later broke a world record for equity crowdfunding, raising significant investment from the public. However, reports later emerged regarding financial difficulties and potential losses for investors in HAB projects.
