Joseph Stein, born in New York City to Polish immigrant parents, began his professional life as a psychiatric social worker before transitioning to a career in writing. His early writing endeavors included comedy for radio and television, notably for "Your Show of Shows." Stein's significant contributions to the theater began with the musical "Plain and Fancy," inspired by the Amish community. This marked the start of his prolific career in musical theater.

His most celebrated work is the book for the 1964 musical "Fiddler on the Roof," which earned him multiple awards, including two Tony Awards. He also penned the screenplay for its film adaptation. Throughout his career, Stein wrote the books for numerous other Broadway productions, including "Zorba," "Take Me Along," and "The Baker's Wife." His work was recognized with inductions into the Theater Hall of Fame and lifetime achievement awards from various theatrical organizations. Stein passed away in 2010 at the age of 98.

Joseph Stein initially pursued a career in social work, earning a Master of Social Work degree from Columbia University and working as a psychiatric social worker from 1939 to 1945. During this period, he also wrote comedy material in his spare time. A fortuitous meeting with actor Zero Mostel opened doors for Stein to write for prominent radio personalities of the era, including Henry Morgan, Hildegarde, Tallulah Bankhead, Phil Silvers, and Jackie Gleason. He later expanded his writing to television, joining the acclaimed writing team for Sid Caesar's "Your Show of Shows," where he collaborated with notable figures like Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, and Neil Simon.

Stein's Broadway career commenced with contributions to the 1948 revue "Lend an Ear." His first full musical book was for "Plain and Fancy," a production that explored the Amish community in Lancaster County and opened on Broadway in 1955. The musical achieved considerable success and has maintained an annual performance tradition at The Round Barn Theatre in Indiana since 1986. Stein's greatest professional triumph arrived with the 1964 musical "Fiddler on the Roof," for which he received three major awards, including two Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Author of a Musical. He also adapted the book for the film version. His extensive list of Broadway credits includes "Zorba," "Take Me Along," "Irene," "Rags," and "Enter Laughing."

In his later career, Stein continued to contribute to musical theater. He wrote the book for "All About Us," based on Thornton Wilder's "The Skin of Our Teeth," which premiered in 2007. His works were frequently featured in staged concert series by organizations like the York Theatre, which presented "Plain and Fancy," "Carmelina," "Zorba," "Enter Laughing: The Musical," "The Body Beautiful," and "The Baker's Wife." The York Theatre also produced a critically acclaimed off-Broadway revival of "Enter Laughing: The Musical." Stein's significant impact on the American theater was recognized through numerous accolades, including induction into the Theater Hall of Fame in 2008 and lifetime achievement awards from The Dramatists Guild of America and the York Theatre Company.
