Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, widely known as NTR, was a towering figure in Indian cinema and politics. He starred in over 300 films, predominantly in Telugu, earning acclaim for his portrayals of Hindu deities like Krishna, Shiva, and Rama, which led to him being called a "messiah of the masses." His acting career spanned decades, during which he also ventured into film direction, production, and screenwriting. He founded his own production company, National Art Theater Private Limited, through which he produced numerous films, including those he starred in. He also established Ramakrishna Studios in memory of his eldest son. Rao was instrumental in developing innovative financial structures that supported film production and distribution. Despite lacking formal training, he authored screenplays for several of his movies and for other producers. His directorial work earned him accolades, including a National Film Award for "Varakatnam" (1970). He also co-produced "Ummadi Kutumbam," which was nominated for the Moscow Film Festival. His later career saw him transition to roles that resonated with working-class audiences, portraying heroes who challenged societal norms, in films like "Adavi Ramudu" and "Kondaveeti Simham."

Political Career and Public Service

Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao transitioned from the world of cinema to a prominent political career, profoundly impacting the political landscape of India. In 1982, he founded the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the first regional political party in Andhra Pradesh. He served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for four terms, accumulating seven years in office between 1983 and 1995. His political tenure was marked by a strong advocacy for a distinct Telugu cultural identity. On a national level, he played a crucial role in the formation of the National Front, a coalition of non-Congress parties that governed India during 1989-1990. His political activism brought about substantial changes in the country's governance and political discourse following its independence. He also established the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital in Hyderabad in memory of his first wife.
