Dottie Lamm was a feminist activist and former First Lady of Colorado who authored several books and advocated for women's rights.

Dorothy Louise Vennard Lamm, born in 1937, is an American feminist, women's rights advocate, educator, author, and speaker. She served as First Lady of Colorado from 1975 to 1987 during her husband Richard Lamm's three terms as governor. During this time, she actively promoted issues such as reproductive rights, equal pay, and child care. Lamm also authored a weekly column for The Denver Post from 1979 to 1996, where she shared her personal life and expressed her political, social, and feminist viewpoints. She was recognized for her contributions by being inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 1985. Lamm later ran for the U.S. Senate in 1998 as the Democratic nominee, though she was unsuccessful. Her career also includes roles as a delegate to international conferences on population and women's rights, and teaching at the University of Denver.

Early Life and Education

Born Dorothy Louise Vennard in New York City in 1937, she was raised in Palo Alto, California. She pursued higher education at Occidental College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. After college, she worked as a stewardess for United Airlines based in Denver. She met Richard Lamm in 1959, and they married in 1963. Following her marriage, she transitioned to a career as a psychiatric social worker, obtaining a Master of Social Work from the University of Denver in 1967.

Public Service and Activism

During her husband's tenure as Governor of Colorado from 1975 to 1987, Lamm utilized her position as First Lady to champion significant social issues. She was instrumental in advancing discussions and policies related to reproductive rights, the principle of equal pay for equal work, and the availability of child care services. Her commitment extended to chairing the Governor's Task Force on Children and serving on the Colorado Commission on Women. Lamm's public engagement was further amplified by her widely read weekly column in The Denver Post, which ran for over fifteen years, offering insights into her personal experiences and her perspectives on political and social matters.

Later Career and Recognition

Lamm's public service extended to national and international stages, including appointments by President Bill Clinton as a delegate to the United Nations Conference on Population and Development in Cairo in 1994 and the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. In 1998, she sought election to the U.S. Senate from Colorado as a Democratic candidate. She was honored with induction into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 1985, and the Women's Foundation of Colorado established the Dottie Lamm Leadership Award in her name. She also dedicated time to teaching at the University of Denver and volunteering with immigrant children and aspiring female politicians.
