Joseph Murphy

Joseph Murphy, born in Ireland in 1898, was a prolific author and minister within the New Thought movement. Initially raised Catholic and educated for the priesthood with the Jesuits, he left the order in his early twenties after an experience with healing prayer. He emigrated to the United States in 1922, initially working as a pharmacist in New York City while attending a Church of Divine Science. His spiritual journey led him to study Hindu philosophy in India, and he later became ordained in both Religious Science and Divine Science. Murphy founded his own church in Los Angeles, focusing on optimistic messages of hope and personal empowerment, which resonated with many. He served in the US Army as a pharmacist during World War II, after which he dedicated himself fully to his spiritual and writing career. Influenced by thinkers like Thomas Troward, Murphy delved into mysticism and became a 32nd-degree Mason. He passed away in 1981, leaving behind a significant body of work.

Murphy's spiritual path began with a Catholic upbringing and a period as a Jesuit seminarian. However, he departed from the Jesuits due to philosophical questions and a desire for broader experiences, eventually emigrating to the United States. In New York, his exposure to the Church of Divine Science marked a turning point. His travels to India deepened his understanding of Hindu philosophy, which he later integrated into his own teachings. He was ordained within Religious Science in 1946 and later in Divine Science in 1949, eventually leading one of the largest New Thought congregations in Los Angeles. A significant influence on Joseph Murphy was the philosopher, judge, and professor Thomas Troward. Troward's teachings provided Murphy with insights into philosophy, theology, and law, alongside an introduction to mysticism. Murphy's interest in esoteric subjects extended to his active involvement in the Masonic order, where he attained the 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite. This blend of intellectual study and mystical exploration informed his unique approach to spirituality and his ministerial work, which sought to empower individuals through the application of mental and spiritual laws.

Murphy was a prolific author, penning over 30 books that explored themes of mind power, healing, and prosperity, firmly placing him within the New Thought movement. This movement, flourishing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, focused on the power of thought and belief to shape reality and achieve desires. His most celebrated work, "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind," published in 1963, became an international bestseller, selling millions of copies. This book, along with his many other writings, aimed to guide readers in harnessing their inner potential for a more fulfilling life.
