John G. Kappas is recognized as a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
John G. Kappas is noted as an initiated member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., a historically Black Greek letter organization. Founded on January 5, 1911, at Indiana University Bloomington, the fraternity was established at a time when the university did not actively encourage the integration of Black students. Kappa Alpha Psi holds the distinction of being the second oldest existing collegiate historically Black Greek letter organization and was the first intercollegiate fraternity to be incorporated as a national body.
The fraternity has grown significantly since its inception. As of its centennial in 2025, it comprises over 260,000 college-educated men. Its presence is widespread, with undergraduate chapters established on more than 360 college and university campuses across the United States. Additionally, alumni chapters are active in over 340 cities within the U.S. and extend to five foreign countries. The fraternity's foundational principles, as outlined in its constitution, have never included clauses that would exclude potential members based on race, creed, or national origin, although its membership has historically been predominantly of African heritage.
