Joan D. Vinge, born April 2, 1948, is an American author primarily recognized for her contributions to science fiction. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology from San Diego State University, which she earned in 1971 after initially studying art. Vinge's personal life has involved two marriages, first to fellow science fiction writer Vernor Vinge and currently to editor James Frenkel. She has two children and resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Vinge has also shared her expertise by teaching at the Clarion Workshop on multiple occasions. Her writing career was significantly impacted by a severe car accident in 2002, resulting in brain damage that temporarily halted her ability to write. She resumed writing around 2007, with her first new book post-accident being the novelization of 'Cowboys & Aliens' in 2011.
