Lu Xun was a foundational figure in modern Chinese literature, known for his critical essays and stories.

Lu Xun, born Zhou Shuren, was a pivotal Chinese writer and critic who significantly shaped modern Chinese literature. He was born in 1881 into a family of declining gentry in Shaoxing. Initially pursuing traditional studies and then Western medicine in Japan, he ultimately abandoned medicine after a profound disillusionment with the spiritual state of his countrymen, dedicating himself to literature instead. Lu Xun became a leading voice of the New Culture Movement, publishing the first novel in vernacular Chinese, "Diary of a Madman." His writings, characterized by sharp satire and critical reflections on Chinese culture and history, gained prominence following the May Fourth Movement. He later became involved with Marxist thought and leftist politics, leading the League of Left-Wing Writers in Shanghai. His works have been highly regarded in the People's Republic of China since 1949.

Early Life and Education

Born Zhou Zhangshou in 1881, Lu Xun came from a once-prosperous gentry family in Shaoxing whose fortunes had waned. His early education focused on Confucian classics, though he found more interest in folk stories and traditional narratives. Facing family financial difficulties, he pursued a Western-style education, attending military and technical schools. He later studied medicine in Japan, driven by a desire to serve his country. However, witnessing the apathy of Chinese onlookers at a public execution of a compatriot during the Russo-Japanese War deeply affected him. This experience led him to abandon medical studies, believing that literature could serve as a more effective means to address the spiritual and societal ailments of China.

Literary Career and Political Engagement

Lu Xun is widely recognized as a pioneer of modern Chinese literature, particularly for his use of vernacular Chinese. His 1918 short story, "Diary of a Madman," is considered the first novel in this style and marked a significant departure from classical literary forms. He became a prominent voice during the New Culture Movement and gained further recognition for his political commentary in "La Jeunesse" after the May Fourth Movement. His writing style was known for its incisive satire and critical examination of Chinese society, tradition, and history. In his later years, Lu Xun became increasingly aligned with Marxist ideology and leftist political movements, eventually serving as the nominal head of the League of Left-Wing Writers in Shanghai during the 1930s.

The other Chinese gathered around him had come to enjoy the spectacle.”
