Jefferys Taylor was a 19th-century English author, engraver, and inventor, primarily known for his humorous and imaginative children's books.

Jefferys Taylor, born in 1792 and passing in 1853, belonged to a prominent 19th-century family of artists and writers. He received his early education as an engraver under his father and was apprenticed in Lavenham. Taylor demonstrated considerable inventive talent, notably developing a machine for engraving parallel lines.

He followed the literary path of his siblings, establishing himself as a children's author whose works were characterized by wit and creativity. His debut novel, "Harry's Holiday" (1818), achieved multiple printings and is retrospectively seen as an early example of unsentimental childhood narratives. Taylor also published "Æsop in Rhyme" (1820), which he illustrated himself and which also went through numerous editions. His educational writings included titles on English history, law, woodland exploration, and farming, some of which were also published in the United States and featured his illustrations.

Taylor married Sophia Mabbs in 1826, and they had a son, Edward, who died in childhood. Jefferys Taylor died in 1853 following a stroke.

Literary Contributions

Jefferys Taylor carved out a niche as a prolific author, particularly for young readers, during the first half of the 19th century. His literary output was marked by a distinctive blend of humor and imaginative storytelling. His first published novel, "Harry's Holiday or the doings of one who had nothing to do" (1818), was well-received, evidenced by its multiple editions. Notably, this work has been identified by some as an early precursor to later, more complex explorations of childhood experiences, offering an unsentimental perspective.

Taylor's creative talents extended to poetry and illustration. His "Æsop in Rhyme, with some originals" (1820) combined rhyming retellings of fables with original verse, accompanied by his own drawings, and also proved popular enough for several editions. Beyond fiction and verse, Taylor penned several educational works aimed at imparting knowledge about English history, law, the natural world, and agriculture. These books, such as "The Little Historians" (1824), "Parlour Commentaries on the Constitution and Laws of England" (1825), "The Forest" (1831), and "The Farm" (1832), often included his illustrations and found an audience in both Britain and the United States.

Early Life and Artistic Background

Born in 1792, Jefferys Taylor was an integral part of a significant family lineage renowned for its contributions to art and literature in the early 1800s. His father, Isaac Taylor, was a painter, and Jefferys himself was trained in engraving, serving an apprenticeship in Lavenham. His early childhood was captured in his father's family portrait, where Jefferys appears as an infant in his mother Ann Martin's arms. This artistic environment likely influenced his own creative development and his later use of illustration in his published works.

Invention and Personal Life

Beyond his literary and artistic pursuits, Jefferys Taylor possessed a notable mechanical aptitude. He is credited with considerable ingenuity, particularly in the invention of a machine designed for engraving parallel lines, a development that proved commercially successful. In his personal life, Taylor married Sophia Mabbs on June 20, 1826. Together, they had one son, Edward, whose life was cut short as he died at a young age. Jefferys Taylor himself passed away on October 8, 1853, in Broadstairs, following a stroke.
