Jay Yadav

Lalu Prasad Yadav, born June 11, 1948, is a prominent Indian politician who has held significant roles including Chief Minister of Bihar and Union Minister for Railways. He founded the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) party, which has been a major force in Bihar's politics. His political career began in student leadership at Patna University, leading to his election as a Member of Parliament. Yadav's tenure as Chief Minister of Bihar saw a significant shift in the state's social and political dynamics, with his party gaining power through coalitions. He also served as the Union Minister for Railways, during which time the Indian Railways reportedly achieved a significant profit turnaround, attracting international academic interest. His political journey has been marked by both electoral successes and legal challenges, including convictions in the Fodder Scam, which led to his disqualification from holding office for a period.

Born on June 11, 1948, in Gopalganj district of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav was the fifth of six sons. His early education took place in local schools before he moved to Patna. He later enrolled at Patna University, where he became involved in student politics, serving as the general secretary and later president of the Patna University Students' Union. He pursued law, earning an LL.B. degree from Patna Law College in 1976. Notably, his academic records from B.N. College have been subject to scrutiny, with claims of completing a two-year course in a single year. He also worked as a clerk at Bihar Veterinary College. Yadav's background and caste affiliation have been points of discussion within the political sphere.

Yadav entered national politics as one of the youngest members of the Lok Sabha in 1977, representing the Bharatiya Lok Dal. His political rise in the 1990s significantly altered Bihar's social and political landscape. He became Chief Minister of Bihar in 1990, a position he held until 1997. During this period, he was noted for his populist appeal and for advocating policies that challenged traditional upper-caste dominance. The slogan 'Bhurabal saaf karo' was reportedly used during his first tenure. He also implemented a pro-English policy in schools, contrasting with some contemporary anti-English sentiments. In 1997, he founded the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) after a split from the Janata Dal, amid allegations related to the Fodder Scam.

From 2004 to 2009, Lalu Prasad Yadav served as the Union Minister for Railways in the UPA government. During his leadership, the Indian Railways, which was reportedly a loss-making entity, declared significant profits. His tenure was characterized by initiatives such as replacing thermocol cups with traditional clay cups (kulhars) to boost rural employment and introducing cushion seats in unreserved compartments. His management of the railways attracted international attention, with business schools like Harvard and HEC Paris developing case studies on his approach. Despite these achievements, allegations of a 2005 Indian Railway tender scam surfaced during his term.

Yadav's party, the RJD, has remained a key player in Bihar's politics, forming governments in coalition with other parties, including with Nitish Kumar's JD(U). The RJD emerged as the single largest party in the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections. However, political alliances have been fluid, with the RJD leading governments that were later dissolved due to shifting coalition dynamics. A significant aspect of his later career has been his conviction in the Fodder Scam, which resulted in a prison sentence and subsequent bail. This conviction led to his disqualification from holding public office for a specified period under the Representation of the People Act.
