Javier Marías Franco (1951-2022) was a prominent Spanish writer, translator, and intellectual. He authored fifteen novels, including the acclaimed "Your Face Tomorrow" trilogy, alongside short stories and essays. His work achieved international recognition, translated into numerous languages and selling millions of copies. Marías also had a significant academic career, teaching at universities in Spain and abroad, and was recognized with prestigious literary awards.

Beyond his literary output, Marías held a unique position as the "King of the Kingdom of Redonda," a micronation founded by Jon Wynne-Tyson. He established a publishing house under this title and created a literary prize. His writing often explored themes of interpretation, narration, and the nature of reality, with protagonists frequently acting as translators or interpreters, reflecting his own background and his view of writers as those "renouncing their own voices."

Javier Marías established himself as a leading Spanish novelist with fifteen novels to his name, including the widely praised "Your Face Tomorrow" trilogy. His other significant works include "A Heart So White" and "Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me." Beyond novels, he published collections of short stories and essays. Marías's literary output was recognized globally, with his books translated into forty-six languages. A recurring theme in his later novels, starting from 1986, is the focus on protagonists who are interpreters or translators. Marías himself was a translator of notable English authors and taught translation, viewing these characters as individuals who "are renouncing their own voices."

Marías's intellectual journey began with studies in philosophy and literature at the Complutense University of Madrid. He later shared his knowledge by teaching at various esteemed institutions, including his alma mater, the University of Oxford, the University of Venice, and Wellesley College in Massachusetts. His involvement with literature extended to translation from an early age, beginning with translating scripts for his uncle, filmmaker Jesús Franco. He translated works by prominent English-language authors such as Updike, Hardy, Conrad, and Faulkner, earning national recognition for his translation of Sterne's "Tristram Shandy."

In 1997, Javier Marías was bestowed the title of "King of the Kingdom of Redonda" by its predecessor, Jon Wynne-Tyson, in recognition of his understanding of the kingdom and his portrayal of a previous king, John Gawsworth, in his novel "All Souls." This event, and the subsequent reception of "All Souls," inspired his "false novel" "Dark Back of Time." Following his ascension, Marías established a small publishing house named Reino de Redonda, releasing works by various authors. He also created the literary prize, Premio Reino de Redonda, awarded to distinguished figures who were also granted honorary titles within his symbolic kingdom.
