Hoffman, Walter James

John Walter Lord Jr. was an American author, lawyer, and popular historian, born in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 8, 1917. His father, a lawyer, passed away when Lord was three. Lord's maternal grandfather had led the Baltimore Steam Packet Company. Early in life, Lord experienced transatlantic travel on a ship sister to the Titanic and spent summers at a boys' camp where he earned the title "The Commodore." He studied history at Princeton, graduating in 1939, and then attended Yale Law School. His studies were interrupted by World War II, during which he served as a code clerk for the Office of Strategic Services in London. After the war, he completed his law degree at Yale.

Lord's career included a stint as a copywriter before he began publishing historical works. He gained widespread acclaim for his 1955 book, "A Night to Remember," a minute-by-minute account of the Titanic's sinking, based on interviews with 63 survivors. This book became a bestseller and was adapted into a film. He also wrote extensively on other historical events, including Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Midway, the Alamo, and the Dunkirk evacuation. Lord continued to engage with the Titanic narrative, publishing another book on the subject in 1986 and serving as a consultant for James Cameron's film "Titanic" in 1997. He passed away on May 19, 2002, at the age of 84.

Lord's other notable books covered a range of significant historical events, including the attack on Pearl Harbor ("Day of Infamy"), the Battle of Midway ("Incredible Victory"), the Battle of the Alamo ("A Time to Stand"), and the Dunkirk evacuation ("The Miracle of Dunkirk"). He also explored periods of American history and Arctic exploration. In his later years, he revisited the Titanic with "The Night Lives On" and consulted on James Cameron's film "Titanic."

Walter Lord's meticulous research and engaging narrative style made history accessible and compelling for a broad audience. His definitive account of the Titanic disaster, "A Night to Remember," cemented his reputation and continues to be a key text on the subject. He frequently shared his expertise through lectures, particularly with the Titanic Historical Society. His work on historical events like Pearl Harbor and Midway also contributed significantly to popular understanding of these critical moments. In recognition of his contributions, a biography titled "The Way It Was: Walter Lord on His Life and Books" was published posthumously in 2009. The documentary "Ghosts of the Abyss" (2003) was dedicated to his memory, underscoring his lasting impact on Titanic literature and film.
