Alfred Edward Woodley Mason was an English author, playwright, and former MP, known for "The Four Feathers" and detective Inspector Hanaud.

Alfred Edward Woodley Mason (1865–1948) was a prolific English writer, also known for his political career as a Liberal Member of Parliament. He began his literary journey after encouragement from Arthur Quiller-Couch and Oscar Wilde, publishing his first novel in 1895. Mason's extensive body of work includes over thirty novels, plays, and short stories, many of which were adapted into films during his lifetime and remain notable cinematic productions. His creative output spanned various genres, from adventure and mystery to historical fiction.

Beyond his literary achievements, Mason had a diverse career. He was an actor before becoming a writer, appearing in the premiere of George Bernard Shaw's "Arms and the Man." He also served in the military during World War I, reaching the rank of major and working in naval intelligence, including counter-espionage operations. Mason's political involvement saw him elected to Parliament for Coventry, though he served only one term. He was reportedly offered a knighthood but declined it. Mason's detective, Inspector Hanaud, created in "At The Villa Rose," is recognized as an early influential figure in 20th-century detective fiction.

Literary and Cinematic Contributions

Mason authored more than thirty books, achieving significant recognition for his 1902 novel, "The Four Feathers," a story exploring courage and cowardice in wartime. This work, often considered his masterpiece, has been adapted into multiple films. He also created the character of Inspector Hanaud, a French detective introduced in "At The Villa Rose" (1910). Hanaud appeared in six novels, serving as an early archetype for later fictional detectives like Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot. Mason's novels and short stories were frequently adapted for cinema, with productions like "Fire Over England" (1937) and "The Four Feathers" (1939) becoming enduring classics. His collaborations extended to the silent film era, where he worked closely with directors on numerous adaptations of his work.

Inspector Hanaud: A New Detective Archetype

In 1910, Mason introduced Inspector Gabriel Hanaud in "At The Villa Rose," deliberately crafting a detective distinct from Sherlock Holmes. Hanaud was depicted as stout, a professional from the French Sûreté, and reliant on psychological insight rather than Holmes's empirical methods. His companion was Mr. Julius Ricardo, a retired London banker. "At The Villa Rose" is considered by some to be the first significant detective novel of the 20th century. The novel also offered a critique of spiritualism and mediums. Hanaud's adventures continued in four more novels and several short stories, with the final one, "The House in Lordship Lane," published in 1946.

Beyond the Pen: Acting, Politics, and War Service

Before dedicating himself to writing, Mason pursued a career as an actor, notably taking a role in the 1894 premiere of George Bernard Shaw's "Arms and the Man." He was also an active participant in cricket. Politically, Mason served as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Coventry from 1906 to 1910. His World War I service included a commission as captain and later major in the Manchester Regiment and Royal Marine Light Infantry. His military duties involved naval intelligence work, establishing counter-espionage networks in Spain and Mexico for the British government.
