Helen A. Berger is a sociologist known for her in-depth studies of the contemporary Pagan community in the United States.
Helen Alice Berger, born in 1949, is an American sociologist recognized for her academic work focusing on the Pagan community within the United States. Her engagement with the subject began in 1986 while she was an assistant professor at Boston University. Initially delivering public lectures on historical witch trials, she expanded her focus to contemporary Paganism, specifically Wicca, drawing on published works and a single interview.
Following her lecture, several attendees identified as practicing Wiccans, leading Berger to connect with the New England Pagan community. She was invited to research a newly forming coven, the Circle of Light, for which she attended meetings and festivals over two years. This immersion provided her with firsthand experience and access to the community.
Berger also joined the EarthSpirit Community (ESC), an organization open to various Pagan paths. Through her involvement with ESC and its founder, Andras Corban Arthen, she met a diverse range of Pagans and developed an extensive network. This led to a significant project with Arthen, "The Pagan Census," aimed at collecting sociological data nationwide, which involved over 15 students and resulted in over 2,000 survey responses.
Early Research and Community Engagement
Helen Berger's academic journey into the study of contemporary Paganism commenced in October 1986. While serving as an assistant professor at Boston University, she delivered a series of public lectures. Initially addressing historical witch trials in New England, she dedicated the final lecture to modern-day Wiccans. Her research at this stage drew from existing scholarly works and a single interview. This lecture proved pivotal, as several audience members revealed themselves to be practicing Wiccans, thereby initiating Berger's direct contact with the New England Pagan community. Subsequently, three Wiccans invited her to participate as a researcher in the formation of their coven, the Circle of Light. For two years, Berger attended their regular meetings and seasonal festivals, gaining invaluable ethnographic insights.
The Pagan Census and Sociological Data Collection
Berger's engagement deepened through her involvement with the EarthSpirit Community (ESC), an organization founded by Andras Corban Arthen and open to non-Wiccans. After joining the ESC and participating in numerous public rituals and festivals, she encountered a wide spectrum of individuals within the Pagan movement. This broadened her network and understanding of the community's diversity. In collaboration with Arthen, Berger initiated a large-scale project known as "The Pagan Census." Supported by funding from West Chester University's Faculty Development Fund, this endeavor involved over 15 students in data coding and entry. The survey was widely distributed through Pagan organizations, journals, online platforms, and festivals, ultimately yielding over 2,000 responses, which formed a primary source for Berger's sociological research on the American Pagan population.
