Hans Josef Klauck

Hans-Josef Klauck (1946–2025) was a German theologian, Franciscan priest, and historian who made significant contributions to the study of the New Testament and early Christian literature. He held professorships at several German universities, including Bonn, Würzburg, and LMU Munich, before becoming the Naomi Shenstone Donnelley Professor Emeritus of New Testament and Early Christian Literature at the University of Chicago Divinity School. His academic career spanned decades, marked by extensive research and publication.

Klauck's scholarly work focused on the social and religious history of the Greco-Roman world, providing context for early Christian texts. He extensively researched topics such as the parables of Jesus, Pauline epistles, Johannine epistles, and the apocrypha of the New Testament. Klauck held professorships in New Testament studies at the University of Bonn (1981), the University of Würzburg (succeeding Rudolf Schnackenburg), and LMU Munich. From 2001 to 2016, he served as the Naomi Shenstone Donnelley Professor of New Testament and Early Christian Literature at the University of Chicago Divinity School. He also held leadership positions, including president of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas (2003/04) and dean of the faculty at Würzburg (1995–1997). His academic work was recognized with an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich in 2008 for his research on early Christianity.

Klauck's research was characterized by a deep engagement with the historical, social, and religious milieu of early Christianity within the broader Greco-Roman world. He was a prolific scholar, authoring over thirty books and more than 250 articles. His work explored key New Testament texts and themes, including the parables of Jesus, the Epistles to the Corinthians, and the Johannine epistles. He also focused on the religious context of early Christianity, examining the influence of Hellenistic religions and paganism. He was also instrumental in editing influential academic series and encyclopedias, further disseminating scholarly research in biblical studies.
