William Grant Lewi II, born in Albany, New York, was an American astrologer and author who made significant contributions to the field of astrology in America. After attending Hamilton College and graduating from Columbia University, Lewi also pursued a career in academia, teaching English at institutions like Dartmouth College and the University of Delaware. His personal life included a marriage to Carolyn Wallace in 1926, and his astrological studies began under the guidance of his mother-in-law, Athene Gale Wallace.
Lewi transitioned to professional astrology in 1934. He gained widespread recognition for his books, particularly "Astrology for the Millions" and "Heaven Knows What." This approach involved 144 Sun/Moon sign delineations and aspect cross-references, developed from extensive questionnaire data. Lewi also played a role in astrological publishing, editing "Horoscope Magazine" and later launching his own publication, "The Astrologer," in 1950. He moved to Arizona in the early 1950s and passed away on July 15, 1951, leaving a legacy that has led to him being called "the father of modern astrology in America."
Pioneering Astrological Synthesis
Grant Lewi is widely regarded for his innovative methods in astrological chart interpretation. His seminal work, "Heaven Knows What," published in 1935 under the pseudonym Scorpio, introduced a novel system of chart synthesis. Lewi developed this system based on analysis of thousands of responses to questionnaires. It featured 144 distinct delineations for Sun/Moon sign combinations and intricate cross-references for planetary aspects. This methodical approach aimed to provide a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of astrological influences, moving beyond simpler interpretations and laying groundwork for more complex astrological analysis.

His book "Astrology for the Millions," released in 1940, became a cornerstone text for many seeking to understand astrology.
